Clarence Justin Dobles is a shy guy. He may have a thick wallet and fancy car, but he has trouble talking to beautiful women, especially the bartender named Alexandra Elizabeth Whitson , on whom he has a debilitating crush.

Clarence gets an idea. But from what? After getting some dating advice from a local tough guy named Patrick Noah Segan , Clarence concocts a ridiculous plan that involves a kidnapping. Patrick and some of his buddies will kidnap Clarence and Alexandra, and the young man will become her protector. The film never feels honestly menacing, or gritty enough to have actual tension. This is far too slick a production for it to have an impact.

Another problem is that Dobles is a snooze. In fact, Segan, a solid character actor, steals the movie. Segan has a skill at playing guys who may be a little more dangerous than their goofy demeanor first implies.

Brian Tallerico is the Editor of RogerEbert. Justin Dobies as Clarence. Elizabeth Whitson as Alexandra. Noah Segan as Patrick. Adi Shankar as K.

In the new Netflix film "Horse Girl," Alison Brie plays a horse-loving young woman named Sarah who sells fabric at a craft store. Sarah takes Zumba, binge watches her favorite TV show and makes accessories for her former horse, Willow. But the film takes an eerie turn when she begins to experience time loss, dreams of waking up in a mysterious white room and finds bruises on her body that she can't explain. Was Sarah abducted by aliens? Or could her experiences be connected to her family history of mental illness? Brie, who also co-wrote the script, says the film intentionally leaves the audience wondering. Though Brie has enjoyed reading fan theories about the end of the movie, the filmmakers wanted the ambiguous ending to prevent the audience from passing judgment on Sarah like some of the characters in the film, she says. The writers wanted to start the story later in life when Sarah is no longer a horse girl. Sarah's mother had depression and her grandmother was committed to a mental institution.

With a cross-cultural emphasis, the contributors focus on movies that use popular songs from a variety of genres, including country, bubble-gum pop, disco, classical, jazz, swing, French cabaret, and showtunes.
