I Passed a Yeast Infection to My Partner Through Sex, and It Wasn’t Pretty
I've had a yeast infection on and off for a year. I've been to the doctor and taken a medicine, but it never really goes away. Can having sex pass it back and forth? My boyfriend has never been treated, but he has no signs of it. What do I need to do?
It's important to go back to your doctor and explain that the medicine isn't working. You may need a different medicine for the yeast infection. For example, if you used a vaginal cream, your doctor might give you a pill instead.
Or, if you used a medicine that you bought at the store without a prescription, you may need a prescription medicine. Your doctor will probably do a vaginal exam and use a cotton swab to get a sample of the vaginal discharge. The sample will go to a lab for testing. Your doctor also will check to make sure that your symptoms aren't from something else. For example, some STDs sexually transmitted diseases can have signs that look like a yeast infection.
Or, yeast infections can sometimes be a sign of another health problem like diabetes or an immune system problem. Guys don't usually get yeast infections. So it's not likely that a yeast infection is passing back and forth between you and your boyfriend. Make your appointment as soon as you can. This is something that you and your doctor can take care of right away! Reviewed by: Robyn R. Miller, MD. Larger text size Large text size Regular text size.

Thrush is a yeast infection caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. Both men and women can get thrush, though it is more often associated with women. Read more about the symptoms of thrush. It can also affect the skin, known as candidal skin infection, and the inside of the mouth, known as oral thrush.
But they can't be blamed for those nasty recurrent yeast infections, contrary to popular belief. A new study by University of Michigan Health System researchers finds that the presence of yeast in male sex partners do not make women more prone to recurrent yeast infections. Certain sexual activities, however, were linked to increased risk of recurrent yeast infections in women, according to the study. This study refutes that belief," says study author Barbara Reed, M. Candida vulvovaginitis, or yeast infection, is one of the most common diagnoses in American women.
Yeast Infections and Sex: What Men and Women Need to Know
Candida albicans is the commonest type of yeast causing thrush. It is different to the yeasts in food. Small numbers of yeasts in the vagina are normal, and usually cause no problems - it is only when they overgrow that they may cause symptoms. Symptoms can include itch and discomfort on the vulva and vagina, a burning sensation and pain when passing urine and during sex. The area around the vulva and vagina may look red and swollen and there may be small skin cracks or splits. Can yeast infections be passed on from a woman to a man during sex?
Sexual intercourse may interfere with yeast infection treatment, and condoms may be damaged by yeast infection medication. Given the prevalence of STDs and yeast infections, it's not unreasonable for a woman to wonder if a yeast infection may increase her risk of other vaginal infections. For the most part, yeast infections aren't associated with the development of an STD. But by scratching to relieve vaginal itching, you may inadvertently create microscopic tears in the skin that allow bacteria or viruses that cause STDs to enter your body more easily.
Candida, a type of yeast, is a normal inhabitant of even the healthiest bodies. It loves warm, dark, moist places, particularly the gastrointestinal tract and the vagina where as many as 20 percent of women of reproductive age harbor Candida. The most common species by far is Candida albicans. Common culprits for this imbalance are antibiotic use, frequent sexual intercourse, irritating soaps or deodorants, wearing tight-fitting undergarments, or any exposure to a hot and humid environment. The role diet plays in increasing the risk of a yeast infection is unclear, but candidal infections are more common in people with diabetes. They are sometimes the first clue to the presence of diabetes.
