How To Dress For Your Body Type When You’re A Big Guy

Once upon a time, there was an incredible show on Travel Channel called Man Vs. If you never tuned in to the mouth-watering half-hour program, it starred a man named Adam Richman—a regular guy like you and me from Brooklyn—who ventured far and wide to find America's greatest, most delicious, heart-burniest grub joints to take on their insane eating challenges. He scarfed down record-sized burgers, the cheesiest, greasiest pizzas, and all manner of insanely hot buffalo wings all in the name of pride for mankind.

But all that eating, even with an intense workout regimen, turned out to be costly for his waistline. So, back in , Adam hung up his big-ole title belt in favor of a smaller actual belt and decided to get serious about his health. In the years since he's shed 70 pounds, but still he knows he's simply never going to look like the 6'2" ectomorphs that strut down fashion runways and are often seen in the pages of GQ. The thing is, most of us are in the same boat, no matter how hard we work out or how closely we watch what we eat.

So, we turned to Adam for his wisdom on shopping as a man who's been larger and a man who now relishes in being able to buy his clothes from some of the best and most tailored menswear labels in the world. Did you find it difficult to shop when you were a bigger guy? There are big guys that really embrace being big guys, like Action Bronson. He's a big guy, but he's not trying to drop any weight any time soon.

That's just his style. But I think for me, being on television, which is kind of an unforgiving medium, I try to find stuff that makes me feel good and attractive.

I was very cognizant of things like horizontal versus vertical stripes and the colors I wore. When I was bigger, I tended to gravitate towards things like suits because a well-fitted suit, regardless of a man's weight, will make him look good. It's almost like a suit of armor.

It's like a man's little black dress. Do you think fitted clothing looked better on you, even when you were bigger? To an extent. I think for most guys it just depends where you're carrying your weight.

I tended to carry a lot in my love handles, and found that a well-fitted T-shirt and a jacket with some nice tailoring covered the love handles without looking like you're putting on layer after layer after layer.

It still allows you to present the best version of yourself. When it comes to T-shirts, what's your move? V-necks, crewnecks, pocket-tees? I've found that a raglan tee or a baseball shirt can be really flattering. It accentuates arms and shoulders. But I also think Western shirts, whether they're from Levi's or vintage, do this too. I also think a black V-neck under a jacket can help lengthen your silhouette. You can wear one with linen pants on a yacht or with black jeans and go to a Foo Fighters concert.

As someone who travels a lot, I always wear a black T-shirt. I think crewnecks don't do a good job or pulling your eyes downward. Wearing one of their military jackets over a T-shirt creates this great frame for your face.

What were some of the styles and brands you turned to before and look to now that you've lost so much weight? I used to shop a lot at Michael Kors. He does a lot of stuff in great jewel tones, or a sweater with, like, a fur collar accent, or just the lines of it are narrowing and slimming.

He makes a lot with details like a side panel in a leather jacket, or epaulettes, that draw your eye down, rather than stuff that like the Kooples which seems to be made for people with no bones.

I feel like the clothes are out of a Steinbeck novel. The clothes are cut from men with big chest and arms. Pants, especially jeans, can cause people problems regardless of size. Which have you found work best for you? Look, I know they're like two decades out of fashion, but for guys with stockier legs, I've found that bootcut jeans lengthen the silhouette.

I think they can balance you out if you have thicker thighs. As far as suits, do you think it's easier or harder for bigger guys these days to get something that looks great? I think that these days you have guys like Hugo Boss and Banana Republic selling separates, and even somewhere like My. I had actually read something in GQ years ago actually where you guys were analyzing the wardrobe of celebrities, and talking about Arnold Schwarzenegger and other guys with bigger thighs.

I remember reading that they will always look better in darker colored pants. Even if you're going to the tropics, you can balance the darker pants with a lighter shirt. Are there certain colors you turn to? Does the all-black thing always work? I think you need other colors in your wardrobe, before A you become a caricature or B your ruse will no longer work and everyone will be, like, "Aww, poor guy.

He's always wearing all-black to try and hide his silhouette. There are gradients in the same family, like blue-black, gunmetal, midnight blue, slate blue, and different things that can add a little bit of a pop. We're big advocates of the tailored sweatpants look here. How do you think bigger guys can pull of this look? To be honest, I think it's hard to wear sweatpants without hearing Jerry Seinfeld in my head telling me it looks like I've given up.

Perhaps I need to investigate the world of high-end sweatpants. But I find that I feel better and feel I look better with a little tapering and structure. It gives you that shape that perhaps late-night love-making sessions with a peanut butter jar can take away.
